Liability for Services in Your Name

Sometimes you contract for services in your name but you do not reap the benefits. The issue then arises whether you are still liable for payment of the service.

After I moved out of my old apartment, my roommate did not pay the electric bills that were in my name. Now the electric company wants me to pay them. Do I have to?

Yes. You are liable for the bills because they are in your name and you contracted with the utility company to pay for the service. You should have terminated the service when you moved out of the apartment so that your roommate would have had to put the service in his name. After paying the bill, you should approach your old roommate and request reimbursement for the expense.
